King’s Lynn Pre 1980 Bangers - Sat 10th August 2024

King’s Lynn 1980 and Prior Meeting in 2024

It’s Old School Banger Night coming up Saturday 10th August, 5pm: Pre80 Bangers (Unders, Middle and Overs) PLUS Pre95 Classic Cars R Us Junior Bangers.

Drivers looking to race will be able to book in closer to race day.

The cars will be split into three classes instead of two.  The new class introduced in 2022 is for under 1750cc cars (but see the detailed spec below as further restrictions also apply).  It is our wish to run a separate Final for this class but we will not do this at the expense of running an entertaining meeting for the paying crowd.  There will be a separate under 1750cc Final as long as one of the following two conditions apply:

·        There are enough under 1750cc cars still running to merit running their own race (at least 20)

·        There are sufficient cars still running in the under 2000cc class that combining the two classes would result in a race of more than 40 cars

Trackstar 1980 and Prior Meeting 2024 – Saturday 10th August

Rules Applicable to All Classes

Cars should be built according to the ORCi National Banger specifications in place at the date of the fixture.

The first heat in all classes will be limited contact.  Nudge and spin only with no deliberate wrecking please.  Following that racing will be to full National Banger rules but with no turning round.

The Classes

The specifications for the individual classes are set out below.  In each case, the list of eligible cars is not an exhaustive list and drivers intending to race something less common should contact the promotion and we will advise which class(es) the car could be used in.

·        Non-Ford replacement engines will almost always be allowed as long as they are age-related but should always be cleared with the promotion first

·        Models marked in bold and underlined are limited to 1300cc in this class if using any type of Ford engine – and no non-Ford engines will be permitted in a Ford

·        Ford engines are permitted as replacements in any make of car.  In this class, 1600cc Zetec engines will be allowed as well as age-related engines but engine markings must be intact and clear of grime so that this can be verified at scrutineering.  No 1800 or 2000cc Zetec engines

·        Non-Ford replacement engines will almost always be allowed as long as they are age-related but should always be cleared with the promotion first

Engine specs for this class are as follows:

·        Engine swaps are permitted but no multi-valve engines unless original to the car.  We expect that most people will use a Ford Pinto or Cologne V6 (or Essex V6!) but any suitable age-related options will be allowed – if in doubt, please check with the promotion.  Note that the Quad-cam Cosworth version of the V6 is not permitted.

·        The engine you use must still be no larger than the original

Note that the later facelifts badged as Volvo 240 / 260 are not in the list above.  These remained in production until 1993 and are not felt to be in the spirit of the meeting.  Earlier big Volvos badged with a model designation not ending in zero and with the pre-facelift bonnets and rear panels are very welcome to race.  Most vehicles registered before 1983 will be suitable but if you are offered a de-badged shell, then please send front and rear photos to the promotion who will verify the car.

Imported cars (American or otherwise) are welcome subject to being of the correct age.  The promotion reserves the right to refuse cars that are so large that they are not in keeping with the spirit of the meeting.

We will continue to adapt the specifications for this meeting as time goes on to maintain acceptable numbers of cars racing.  The main change this year is the re-introduction of the Granada to the overs class.  This step has been taken in preference to opening up the class to more modern engines.  The intention is to attract a few extra cars whilst keeping the meeting slower than a general Unlimited fixture.  Granadas will handle well and yes, there are people out there with built V6 engines and Jag setups, but not to the same extent that people have access to tweaked Duratecs.

What next?

Bookings for this meeting will not open until much nearer the time, we do not anticipate exceed the capacity of the pits with these sorts of cars.  Drivers can therefore start building with confidence that they will be able to get a booking when the time comes.  We are happy to answer queries about cars and engines for the meeting with immediate effect – photos are always useful if you are not sure about the age of a particular model you have in stock.
