1300 Stock Car Best in Britain
The 1300cc Stock Cars had an away day in London on Sunday, as the Best in Britain Championship was staged at Wimbledon Stadium. Representing Trackstar was 653 Gemma Rainer who sadly came away with little to show for her efforts after an action-packed evening’s racing on a wet surface.
Spedeworth form driver 415 Jamie Blackman took both heats, the first in a dominant display and the second after pushing wide Steve Newman Memorial winner 167 Jimmy Morris and then pulling clear after a late caution. Rainer meanwhile was in the thick of the action, taking a couple of trips into the unforgiving fence as well as putting away 229 Steven Carter.
Rainer was treated to another close-up of the post-and-rope fence in the final as a result of race-leader 137 Curtis Tebbenham’s uncompromising approach, before she was collected by 323 Sam Rigby. Tebbenham meanwhile held on out front until the final bend when second-placed Morris unleashed a desperate lunge which saw him clip the inner curb and launch onto two wheels, collecting Tebbenham in the process. That allowed World Champion 171 Adam O’Dell to attack on the inside as the leading pair attempted to recover. But the best he could manage was to push a fully sideways Morris over the line to clinch victory for the latter in spectacular style. Morris’s simultaneous punch of the air as he took the flag while facing the infield summed up the bizarre finish to an entertaining night.
