Introduction

Just three weeks after their last visit, the Kings of the Ovals – BriSCA Formula One stock cars – return to King’s Lynn this weekend (Saturday 19 May, 5:30pm) to serve up some more spellbinding action. It is a big night too for the 1300cc Stock Cars, with their biggest meeting of the season at King’s Lynn, the European Championship. Completing the bill is a popular return for V8 Hotstox.

There are currently 46 F1 Stock Cars, 55 1300 Stock Cars and 29 V8 Stock Cars booked in to race

Please note that any driver who turns up unbooked will not receive any complimentary admissions that they may be entitled to and may also not be allowed to race if the event is still fully booked.

Drivers should book in to race through their association.

Drivers please note that the pits open at  2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.

BriSCA Formula One

The two meetings so far in 2018 at King’s Lynn have provided terrific action, and there’s every reason to expect more of the same this weekend, with over 40 cars taking to the track in a six-race programme.

IMG_4317

There has been plenty of action at this year's King's Lynn F1 Stock Car events

Final winner last time out, 515 Frankie Wainman Jr is the most successful driver of all time on the Saddlebow Road shale. The grading points leader will be gunning for his 17th main event success at the track. FWJ will be joined, as ever, by brother Danny (212) and children Phoebe (211) and Frankie Jr Jr (555), who will all be chomping at the bit, with Phoebe racing under a blue roof at King’s Lynn for the first time.

515

Will 515 Frankie Wainman Jnr - who is the most successful driver to have raced at Saddlebow Road - be taking another feature final on Saturday?

There are other significant grade changes this month, including for the man who won the opening final of the year here, local fans’ favourite 326 Mark Sargent who is in the form of his life and has reached the red grade for the first time. Joining him in that feat are the ever-popular 45 Nigel Harrhy and 192 Luke Dennis who, as a shale-only racer, has done particularly well to pile on the points.

Shale only F1 racer 192 Luke Dennis has done exceptionally well to reach star grade for the first time

Norfolk’s finest, 16 Mat Newson will be looking to make the most of home track advantage. He’s yet to win a final this year but after a few near-misses it will surely be only a matter of time – what better time than this weekend

After a spell on the sidelines, it is great to see 84 Tom ‘Hitman’ Harris back on track. King’s Lynn was the scene of his world title triumph in 2013, so it is a track with fond memories for the international racer. Whether he’s able to hit top-form immediately on his return to the loose remains to be seen, but he will certainly make good use of the bumper and will be one to watch.

After a spell on the sidelines "The Hitman" - 84 Tom Harris returns to the scene of his 2013 World triumph

Others who should be in strong contention for race wins include two men who go very well at the Adrian Flux Arena, Leicestershire duo 259 Paul Hines and 335 Mark Woodhull, while 127 Austin Moore deserved more than he had to show for his efforts three weeks ago, and 166 Bobby Griffin has also been going very well on the loose this year.

166 127

127 Austin Moore and 166 Bobby Griffin both went well at our last meeting

As always, we a delighted to welcome a contingent of Dutchmen who are certain to get stuck in and entertain the crowd. H40 Mark and H410 Jelle Tesselaar, as well as H295 William Zwerver, are all very capable drivers, while H447 Patrick Tersteeg has previously been crowned World of Shale champion in BriSCA F2 on these shores and will be looking to continue building his experience in the big F1 machinery.

H295 WIllem Zwerver is one of several overseas Mainland European drivers making the welcome trip over to be in action at King's Lynn on Saturday

1300cc Stock Cars

There is a massive entry of cars for the European Championship, headed by the Spedeworth trio who hold the formula’s three biggest titles. 23 Lee Pearce defends the European crown, 713 Ian Beaumont is the world champion, while 129 Will Morphey lifted the last major title to be held at King’s Lynn, the British Championship.

World Champion 713 Ian Beaumont leads a strong Spedeworth challenge for the 1300 Stock Car European

The locals will have their work cut out to keep those three from stealing the silverware on offer this weekend, but the three-time World of Shale champion 216 Dan Booth could be just the man to do it. National points champion 450 Luke Jackson will also hope that his new-for-2018 car can carry him to a first major title from a one-off race.

Three times World of Shale Champion 216 Dan Booth will be a strong contender

Another local with plenty of pedigree is 473 Dean Moat who won the unified European title on its first staging at King’s Lynn, six years ago. He hasn’t consistently performed at that kind of level since the adoption of more modern cars into the standard regulations shortly afterwards, and will have to make the grid via the last-chance race, but a final win at the end of last year showed that he can still do it.

Other locals who will fancy their chances include 2016 world champion 333 Dan Weavers, who is still looking to recapture that kind of form, and consistently strong duo 400 Kevin Shinn and 422 Martin Taylor (who, as a Yorkshireman, isn’t exactly local, but he is a regular and represents the home promotion in the main event).

400

400 Kevin Shinn is another who will have hopes of taking the title

The Scottish representation looks very strong in the form of 42 Billy Wilson, 67 Craig Haxton and 124 Andrew Mathieson, who have all been relatively regular visitors, but may still struggle to find the ultimate pace against the shale regulars. 388 Paul Ford, runner-up in last year’s world championship, can count on his BriSCA F1 and BriSCA F2 experience at the track, but again must only be an outside threat.

 388

Scotland's 388 Paul Ford will be looking to put his BriSCA F1 & F2 experience to good use as he looks to win the 1300 European

Spedeworth’s challenge is bolstered by Morphey’s younger brother Charlie (92) and their father George (29) who has been known to forego his own chances to help his sons in the big races.

Others who could be a threat if they get through the last-chance race include 317 Lauren Overy, returning from a spell on the sidelines, and 149 Todd Payne. But with such a large entry of lower graded drivers, even making the grid is going to be a hard task for many.

317

If 317 Lauren Overy can qualify on the night and keep on all four wheels she will mount a serious threat

V8 Hotstox

The Rover V8-engined cars made two appearances at King’s Lynn last year and proved very popular. Their British Championship race in July in particular was a magnificent contest, in which 409 Luke Maw eventually prevailed.

IMG_4054

409 Luke Maw won an exciting British Championship in the V8 Stock Cars last year

Maw, who is also the European champions, is set to be a frontrunner once again, along with world champion 1 Adam Joyce and speedy brothers 298 Tom and 498 Olly Spencer.

Others to look out for include multiple former champion 131 Kevin Stuchbury, shale specialist 575 Darren Cottrill, and 485 Steve and 490 Craig Thompson, who have started the season strongly. 222 Guy Jolly will enjoy a fairly short drive to a meeting for once, and should also be at the sharp end.

Further intrigue is provided by top Ministox graduate 8 Catherine Harris and one of her predecessors 154 Sophie Maynard, while 173 Ashley and 174 Richard Pursey have made the switch from BriSCA F2.

Funfair Rides

All the fun of the fair will be at King's Lynn on Saturday with the famous Helter Skelter making an appearance. The good news for mum and dad is that the ride will be free for the kids to go on as often as they like!
