Introduction
One of the highlights of the Banger Racing calendar comes to the Adrian Flux Arena on Saturday (20 August, 5:30pm), as the 2016 Shale World Banger Championship is staged for Two-Litre Bangers. Also in action are the unmissable Two-Litre Saloon Stock Cars and Junior Bangers.
Any 2L or Junior Banger Driver who is either looking to race but not yet booked in or listed below and no longer able to race should ensure they contact the office asap on 01553 771111 / 07939 580652. Any Saloon driver should contact the SSCA secretary on 01472 813969.
There are currently 83 2L Bangers, 35 2L Stock Cars and 26 Junior Bangers booked in for action.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
Two-Litre Bangers
The premier title for limited cc Bangers on shale will be defended by hometown driver 673 Darren Fendley who has spent the season so far displaying his gold roof at tracks across the country and will be aiming to become the first driver ever to successfully retain the championship in its near-30-year history.
Other leading contenders from the home promotion include brothers 337 Ashley and 338 Terry Garrod, plus 322 Tom Fox, and the man who topped the qualifying points, 830 Lee White.
830 Lee White was the top points scoring TSR Driver in the 2L Banger World Series
Former champions and team-mates 390 David Gibson and 399 Jonny Atkin will be looking to take their second titles, while 601 Chris Medler will be aiming to add this one to the 1500cc National title he claimed a few years ago.
Can 390 David Gibson repeat his success of 2014?
The remaining Trackstar contenders may not be among the favourites, but with a drawn grid, no one can be ruled out. Veteran 701 Kevin Cooper is a two-litre specialist nowadays, while 11 Ryan Leeks and 128 Andrew Shipp are more than capable of taking the win should the race come to them. They may also have the advantage of going under the radar in a race which traditional sees warring among the big teams.
Can 128 Shippy go under the radar in an event which traditionally sees warring between the big teams
Of the visiting seeds, Spedeworth’s 331 Jason Jackson will start among the favourites having come close on a number of occasions, but could well fall foul of those wanting to stop him. 247 Lee Clarke is another who has the credentials to win but may struggle to avoid trouble, while the same could be said for brothers 382 Jack Foster Jr and 82 Tom Foster, both former tarmac World Champions.
Can 247 Lee Clarke finally get the chequered flag in an event he has come close in recent years
With their shale experience, the RDC seeds may be the most likely visitors to take the gold roof elsewhere. 328 Daniel Lathan won this title back in 2013 while 326 Shane Lynn and 327 Mick Maskell Jr will also be in contention.
Further visitors come from all across the country, including the north and south of England and Scotland, making this one of the most cosmopolitan line-ups you will see in the sport.
Two-Litre Saloon Stock Cars
The Heavy Metal Brigade never fail to serve up wall-to-wall action, with big fields always keeping things lively on track.
2L Stock Car races are always full of action.
Local men 641 Willie Skoyles Jr and 428 Lee Sampson, European and National Champions respectively, will be among the frontrunners, while World Champion 6 Simon Welton, English Champion 217 Sid Madgwick and ORC Champion 499 David Aldous complete a superb line-up of the formula’s champions.
499 David Aldous is part on an impressive array of champions on show
The last two finals at the track have gone to 349 Michael Allard, who holds a narrow advantage in the track points over Aldous, and 570 Simon Venni, with both men in top form ahead of this, the final meeting before the grid for September’s World Final is set.
Can 349 Michael Allard continue his recent god form at the track?
Two men who started the season late but have been more than making up for that in recent weeks are 998 Wayne Cottrill Jr and 733 Kyle Picton. Both have been absolutely flying with Picton in particular arguably the revelation of the season.
Barnes brothers 26 Tommy, 131 Timmy and 126 Harry have kicked up a gear in recent meetings and are in fine form. With their all-action style, they will be ones to watch.
Scotsman 600 Barry Russell, the most competitive driver from north of the border on shale, makes another welcome visit, where he will be looking to get stuck in among the locals.
Junior Bangers
A very healthy field of youngsters should provide some competitive racing, with the entry topped by the sport’s superstars, World Champion 364 Bradley Lee and National Points Champion 997 Wayne Cottrill III. Cottrill will be joined by the latest on the Wisbech production line, 999 Louie Cottrill, who is very much at the opposite end of his Junior Banger career.
997 Wane Cottrill will be joined by brother 999 Louie Cottrill
Final winner last time out, 608 Lennie Murkin will look to continue that kind of form, while 229 Harry Cobb, 308 Adam Richardson and long-distance traveller 340 Will Brazier should be among the pace-setters.
Expect 608 Lennie Murkin - who won the final last time out - to be amongst the pace setters.
Ministox regular 146 Ben Nichols should add further interest, particularly from his White grade start – if he gets to grip with car and track early on, he could be tough to beat from there.
Fairground Ride
All of the fun of the fair will be at the Adrian Flux Arena this Saturday with the return of the Crazy Fun House. The good news for mum and dad is that it the ride is free for kids to go on and they can go on them often as they like!!!
The Crazy Fun House will be at Lynn on Saturday for the kids to have fun in between the action
