Introduction
The biggest meeting of the season so far comes to the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn on Saturday 23 April (5:30pm) when huge fields of Unlimited Bangers and Two-Litre Saloon Stock Cars will be in action for some St George’s Day Carnage. Championships are on the line in both formulas. The big Saloon Stock Cars are contesting their English title, the biggest race of 2016 at the category’s most competitive track. The East Anglian Championship, effectively a domestic title only in name, is up for grabs for the Unlimited Bangers.
DRIVERS PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT RACING BUT NOT LISTED BELOW YOU NEED TO BOOK IN ASAP ON 01553 771111 OR 07939 580652. ALSO IF YOU APPEAR BELOW BUT CAN NO LONGER RACE YOU MUST CANCEL ASAP ON THE SAME NUMBERS.
There are currently 87 Unlimited Bangers and 54 2L Stock Cars booked in to race.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
Please note that this meeting is now fully booked - any driver turning up not booked in will not be allowed to race. If you want to be added to the reserve list please contact 07939 580652.
Two-Litre Saloon Stock Cars
At least half of the massive entry will have ambitions of being crowned English Champion after a gruelling series of qualifying heats and final, all to be contested on the night.
Defending his English Championship crown will be Norwich-based shale specialist 304 Martyn Parker. Parker took the title at Mildenhall, emulating the achievement of his son, 306 Daniel Parker, two years prior. The pair would love to keep it in the family for a third year in four, with Daniel rated the more likely winner after a strong start to the season which has seen him score more on shale than any other driver.
304 Martyn Parker following his English Championship victory last year at Mildenhall - will he keep the shield after Saturday?
When it comes to major titles, on any surface really but especially on East Anglian shale, 499 David Aldous is never far from contention. He claimed the National Championship here last year, and the man who is also ORC Champion will be looking to complete the set of all major honours with the English. It would be long overdue in a glittering career and would carry extra significance for the driver rated by most of his peers as the man to beat, as his name would join that of his father Eddie on the trophy.
The English Championship carries extra significance for 499 David Aldous as it is the one title the multi champion has yet to win
World Champion 6 Simon Welton may not be racing quite as often as some of his competitors this season, but he has won more races than anyone else in the country and is certain to be another leading contender. Locally based British Champion 428 Lee Sampson has generally been going a bit better on tarmac than shale in recent times but it is only a few years since he claimed his first British crown at King’s Lynn and will only be written off at the peril of others.
Two more pairs of brothers – 26 Tommy and 131 Timmy Barnes, plus 124 Ollie and 321 Marcus Skeels – would love to secure their first major title at their home track, though each is yet to hit their best form so far this year.
321 Marcus Skeels will be hoping for an easier ride than what he had last month
Lynn local 641 Willie Skoyles Jr is amazingly still seeking his first major crown – although he did win the Driver of the Year title here last year. He is more than capable and surely deserves a little bit more luck in a big race.
Currently top of the National Points by a significant margin, 730 Deane Mayes is another who would well-deserve a first “roof title”. The effort the Diss-based driver puts in is second to none and he is clearly currently on top of his game.
730 Deane Mayes us currently in great form and leads the National Points
Second in the National Points after a superb start to the season is 218 Jacob Downey. The Wisbech driver has already scooped the Northampton track championship and – more significantly – the British Under-25 title at King’s Lynn in 2016. Could he continue his fine form and claim an even bigger honour?
Others who have been going well in the opening weeks of the campaign include mid-March final winner 912 Andi Newman, and surprise standout performer in the lower grades, 389 Ryan Santry. Could the Cambridgeshire-born man spring another surprise and walk away with the title?
389 Ryan Santry has been the standout performer in the low grades over the early months of the season
That barely scratches the surface of the potential winners in this hard-hitting formula – there is plenty to look forward to.
Unlimited Bangers
The entry drawn for the first Unlimited outing of the regular-season at King’s Lynn is quite astounding, a veritable who’s who of East Anglian Banger Racing – and, in some cases, beyond!
Unlimited Banger races are always full of lots of action and big hits
Amongst the host of champions in the line-up, the defending East Anglian champion is perhaps something of a lesser-known name. But 821 Ryan Preston, the long-time Damage Inc team member, hit a rich vein of form at the start of last season, his first as a Trackstar driver, which included scooping the EA title.
821 Ryan "Dangerous" Preston is the defending East Anglian Champion
Preston is sure to be in contention once again but he faces incredibly strong competition, headed by four drivers with gold paint on their roofs. The Unlimited World Champion, 617 Jack Overy, makes a relatively rare appearance on one of his most local tracks, while World of Shale champion 160 Shayn Winsor is an absolute master of the Unlimited scene at King’s Lynn. The quartet is completed by (2000cc) World Champion 673 Darren Fendley and (1500cc) National Champion 338 Terry Garrod.
The list of champions doesn’t stop there as RDC pairing 313 Craig Osborne (British champion) and 570 Jordan Cumming (National Points champion) will also be in action, in addition to Trackstar’s Micro Banger UK Champion, 337 Ashley Garrod.
Throw in drivers with multiple big titles to their name in the past, like 22 Dave Vincent, 33 Gary Madgwick, 247 Lee ‘Bro’ Clarke (twice an EA champion), 811 Pete Winter and Lincolnshire’s finest 390 David Gibson and 399 Jonny Atkin, and the credentials of the line-up are clear to see.
Expect 392 Sam Baines to be involved in the action
Many of those mentioned so far are equally capable of going on big wrecking sprees as taking race wins, but there are plenty more drivers likely to thrill the crowd with their action-packed style of racing too. 196 Ben Harrison has earned rave-reviews with some of his past performances at King’s Lynn, while 43 Nicky Bishop, 89 Joe Barrett, and the Bears team 133 Karly Day (who won the EA title in 2011), 266 Callum Hall, 321 Kieran Fry and 831 Shane Fry are just some of the others well known for providing action on-track.
We are also delighted to once more welcome one of the country’s best-known crashing teams, the Sowter/Filmer quartet of 288 Carl Sowter, 388 Taylor Sowter, 883 Jack Filmer and 884 Tom Filmer.
388 Taylor Sowter always puts on an entertaining displauy
A good entry from the Gypsy Crew will be looking to continue the strong form they recently showed in 1500cc Bangers, while there are also entries from the popular Mr Men, SHB, Bad News, Gladiators and Predators outfits.
Fairground Ride
All of the fin of the fair will be at the Adrian Flux Arena this Saturday with the return of the Fun House which contains lots for the kids to go on before the meeting and during races. The good news for mum and dad is that it is free for kids to go on and they can go on it as often as they like!!!
