Introduction
The 2017 stock car racing season kicks off in style at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn, on 4 March (5:30pm) with three hard-hitting formulas that provide a capacity entry to thrill the crowd. The pits will be jam-packed with BriSCA Formula Two, Two-Litre Saloon and 1300cc stock cars, all clad in iron ready to dish out the hits in a meeting that is definitely one not to be missed.
There are currently 65 F2 Stock Cars, 45 2L Stock Cars and 51 1300cc Stock Cars
Please note this meeting is currently fully booked - there are currently a number of reserves who cannot get a booking and any driver who is booked in but unable to race must ensure they cancel their booking asap
Any driver who is not listed below will not be allowed to race if they turn up.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
F2 Stock Cars
As ever, the world qualifying campaign begins at the King’s Lynn season opener. With the World Final set to be staged on shale for the second year running, it’s no surprise that the drivers are keen to get their qualifying scores ticking over as soon as possible. The entry reached capacity weeks before the meeting with a list of reserves waiting in the wings.
BriSCA F2 Stock Car Racing returns to King's Lynn on Sat 4 March
Appropriately for the first stop on the road to gold, there is a large international presence with a number of Dutch racers making the trip to Norfolk. They include young gun H218 Sjeng Smidt Jr, who has a shown a liking for the track in the past, and regular visitor H103 Chris van der Elst. H281 Danny van Spijker should be debuting his new Dave Polley-built car and is therefore likely to be a strong contender, while experienced racer H231 Peter Schut is also among the contingent.
National points champion 7 Gordon Moodie begins the defence of his silver roof. The Scotsman, a former King’s Lynn track champion, appeared to re-find his love of shale last year so it will be interesting to see how he fares. Joining him on the trip from north of the border are 41 Dennis Middler, a regular at our season openers, and 100 George MacMillan Jr, the former world and national points champion who also likes to shift some shale whenever he can.
7 Gordon Moodie will be back on the shale
Defending the King’s Lynn track championship is 226 Billy Webster. The Yorkshireman managed to claim the title without taking a single race win at the track last year, so will be hoping to put that right as soon as he can.
Multiple world of shale champion 606 Andrew Palmer scored two heat-and-final doubles on the Saddlebow Road shale last season but didn’t manage to back up those successes with the consistency required to lift a third King’s Lynn track championship. He is certain to be among the pace-setters again this year though and will definitely be one with his eyes on the gold prize.
Will 606 Andrew Palmer be back in the winners' circle?
The field is packed with drivers who have bulging CVs when it comes to shale racing. 38 Dave Polley, 103 Carl Issitt, 823 Sam Wagner, 871 Mark Simpson and 905 Rob Mitchell are all up there with the very best.
Expect 38 David Polley to be in the middle of the action
Beyond the obvious candidates for success, there are plenty more interesting names on the entry. South-western tarmac specialists 783 James Rygor – the former world champion – and 111 Lewis Geach make the long trip to have a go on the loose. After a spell in 1300cc stock cars and on the circuits, 121 Henry King makes a return to the formula, while 599 Jon Lawrence is another returnee.
Among several debutants, a full BriSCA F2 debut for 113 Pat Issitt (son of Carl) is particularly intriguing, while Ministox graduate 414 Josh Rayner make his track debut alongside his father 413 Richard.
Two-Litre Saloon Stock Cars
The staging of the Clive Grief Memorial is always a fantastic way to start the season and year after year raises a mind-blowing entry that even many major championships fail to match. With a dazzling array of brand new or completely rebuilt cars racing under the lights on opening night, stock car racing doesn’t come much better.
2L Stock Cars always produce spectacular action
Defending the Clive Grief Memorial trophy is double world champion 6 Simon Welton. The Norwich racer probably thought it wouldn’t be possible to top his 2015 achievements but in 2016 he did just that. A season in which he became the first man to win back-to-back world titles on different surfaces was bookended by triumphs at King’s Lynn in the prestigious opening meeting and a quite astonishing climax to the season in October. Welton came out on top of a three-way fight for the track championship crown that night, deposing seven-time champion 499 David Aldous in the process.
World Champion 6 Simon Welton was the winner of the Clive Grief Memorial for 2L Stock Cars last year
Aldous, one of the most decorated drivers of all time, is sure to come back fighting in 2017, as is the third man in that epic tussle, 349 Michael Allard.
The sport’s other major champions are well-represented, headed by King’s Lynn local 428 Lee Sampson (national) and Norfolk man 730 Deane Mayes (national points and ORC). Fellow East Anglian 217 Sid Madgwick (English) and Kent racer 158 Shane Davies (UK) also feature in the star-studded line-up.
National Points & ORCi Champion 730 Deane Mayes will be amongst the star studded line up
The international flavour of the F2s is continued in the Saloons with surprise visits from Irishmen 711 Anthony and 811 Kieran McIvor. Dutch racer 32 Frankie van Riet also makes the trip at the start of the year in which the revived World of Shale title will be contested at Emmen in his homeland.
Adding yet more intrigue to the line-up are Scotsman 38 Barry Glen and English-domiciled Irishman 62 David Hearst, plus the latest influx of big names from Banger racing. Unlimited Banger World of Shale title winner 148 Ian Redden is joined by 25 Andrew Shipp and 127 Will Longford who all know their way around the Adrian Flux Arena very well.
1300cc Stock Cars
The smaller stock cars also contest their own version of the Clive Grief Memorial, with an entry that’s just as packed.
Winner of the title last year was 161 Billy Smith. The explosive driver is as quick as anyone when he wants to be – will this be one of those occasions, or will he be too busy getting into skirmishes?
What sort of mood will 161 Billy Smith - the winner of the Clive Grief Memorial last year be in?
World of shale champion 216 Dan Booth announced his return to the formula with a blistering display at this meeting last year. The multiple title winner will be setting his stall out as the man to beat on the Saddlebow Road shale this year. Having claimed the first edition of the Clive Grief Memorial back in 2010, he would love to add another this year.
Expect 216 Dan Booth to be challenging prominently
Veteran racer 673 John Moat is another former winner of the title. He and his sons 473 Dean and 573 Shane have had a disappointing couple of seasons with their venerable machinery increasingly off the pace against the more modern cars. But Dean will be debuting a new car at the meeting, and reinvigorated over the winter, the hard-working Wisbech-based family could be challenging near the front once more.
There is plenty of Scottish interest in the field, headed by regular visitor 67 Craig Haxton and 122 Zak Gilmour, along with the all-action 631 Peter Low.
Scottish visitor 631 Peter Low always produces an action packed performance
Our four regular lady racers are joined by 57 Amy Webster who is making her 1300cc stock car debut. She was stellar at King’s Lynn in her Ministox career and, after a handful of tarmac outings in BriSCA F2 last season, could be one to watch from the front of the field.
