Introduction
The 2016 Banger Racing season kicks off in style at the Adrian Flux Arena on Sunday (24 January, 12 noon) with the 23rd running of the British Team Championship for Unlimited Bangers, also known as Icebreaker XXIII. Support comes from a full field of Junior Bangers.
There are currently 86 Unlimited Bangers and 31 Junior Bangers booked in.
Any driver who is not listed but would like to race should book in asap on 01553 771111 or 07939 580652
Unlimited Bangers
The leading names from across the Banger Racing world will converge in West Norfolk to contest the sport’s biggest team title. The defending champions are a local crew, however. Captained by World and National Points Champion 673 Darren Fendley, Team Bash will attempt to defend their 2015 crown with an unchanged team – Fendley is supported by RDC trio 116 Nat Cohn, 188 John ‘Victor’ Reeves and 898 Andy Battle.
World Champion 673 Darren Fendley leads defending champions Team Bash
It is last year’s runners-up that perhaps start as favourites though. The all-star line up of multi-World Champions 331 Jason ‘Boxer Jack’ Jackson, 382 Jack ‘Chubby’ Foster Jr and 82 Tom Foster, plus 807 Chris Murfin will take some beating as they seek their first Unlimited Icebreaker title.
Damage Inc are another successful team who have surprisingly never lifted the Unlimited Icebreaker crown. Led by former World of Shale champion 247 Lee ‘Bro’ Clarke, they will be out to put that right.
247 Lee Clarke will be in action with Damage Inc
The current World of Shale champion 160 Shayn Winsor is as good as anyone in Unlimited Bangers. Backed up by multiple title winner 328 Daniel Lathan, the pacy but underrated 318 Tony Citro and Shayn’s son Ross (960), he will be aiming to lead his Valley Services Massive team to glory.
Last year’s Icebreaker entertainers league winners were the Mad Hatters. With two teams entered on this occasion, they should be contenders for more silverware, and are equally likely to be frontrunners in the race for both titles. Their ‘A’ team, led by 390 David Gibson, is power-packed with drivers who can win races and pull off the big shots.
390 David Gibson and the Mad Hatters won the Entertainer Points at the Icebreaker last year - will they do it again this year?
Other leading contenders for the day’s entertainers league include the Predators and the Gypsy Crew though their chances may depend on whether they get drawn into a private battle. With five teams entered between the two local squads – led by the likes of 779 Luke ‘Munch’ Allen and 85 James Ellis – there should be fireworks aplenty.
The Loveable Rogues should live up to their name with livewire 161 Billy Smith making a rare appearance in Bangers. He and the Aldridge brothers (257 Timmy and 921 Jack) are as capable of wrecking as they are of winning races, while 122 Mark Cooper should also be lively.
Expect 122 Mark Cooper to be a lively player for the Loveable Rogues
From further afield, we are pleased to welcome the southern-based Team Sowter squad. These boys have been some of the country’s top entertainers for a few years now but really lit up the shale scene last season. They must have a very strong chance of lifting the day’s entertainers league, as do their fellow (mainly) southern-based team, the Bears.
The Black Rats, Bad News and Mr Men teams are Icebreaker regulars who can usually be relied upon to turn out some well-presented, impressive machinery and use it to entertain on track. The Wild Boyz, with two outfits entered, are more Icebreaker favourites who will get stuck in and heat up the action.
This should be one of the largest entries of Unlimited Bangers seen anywhere in the country this year and will be one to savour.
Junior Bangers
We have a full field of drivers in the under-16s formula that is the breeding ground for those who will be taking part in the Icebreaker itself in years to come.
Superstar Midlands visitor 16 Jamie Hopkins will be the one to beat, while local lad 61 John Klyn has made great strides in the formula, winning races in both our last two meetings so that he now holds a red roof.
61 John Klyn has made great strides in the Junior Bangers recently and will race with a red roof for the first time on Sunday
148 Jamie Blything and 608 Lennie Murkin have proved to be livewires on track, while 41 Lee Barnes is another making good progress and 854 Aiden Storr is following the family path of providing entertainment on track.
With a new year comes a new generation a youngsters stepping into the formula, and we are pleased to welcome a number of debutants this weekend.
