Introduction
Day two of another weekend full of racing at the Adrian Flux Arena features the 1300cc Stock Car version of the Steve Newman Memorial, plus Micro Bangers and Lady Bangers. Racing gets underway at 1pm on Sunday (26 June).
DRIVERS PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT RACING BUT NOT LISTED BELOW YOU NEED TO BOOK IN ASAP ON 01553 771111 OR 07939 580652. ALSO IF YOU APPEAR BELOW BUT CAN NO LONGER RACE YOU MUST CANCEL ASAP ON THE SAME NUMBERS.
There are currently 83 Micro Bangers, 46 1300 Stock Cars & 28 Lady Bangers booked in to race.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 10am and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
Micro Bangers
The smallest Banger Racing class never fails to attract big numbers and provide plenty of action on track. Among those likely to be at the sharp end of proceedings are perennial points challengers 338 Terry Garrod and 337 Ashley Garrod. Younger brothers 339 Jack Garrod and 99 Ricky Garrod will also be in action, with Ricky developing into something of a Micro specialist. Both Jack and Terry are also riding high in the Entertainers League, which may lead to them throwing caution to the wind and getting involved in the rough stuff, particularly with the family’s old rival 566 Tony Pallett also in action.
Currently top of the Micro Banger UK Championship qualifying points is 322 Tom Fox. The Suffolk youngster will be looking to cement his advantage over the chasing pack. As well as the Garrod brothers, who are all in the top dozen or so, those hunting him down include 452 Paul Sweet, 830 Lee White and Micro specialist 55 Ricky Ivatt who are all due in action this weekend.
601 Chris Medler will be looking to secure the June Entertainer of the Month title, taking advantage of the fact that most of the other leading contenders this month are not regulars in Micro Bangers.
A three-pronged Mad Hatters attack of 390 David Gibson, 394 Tom Baines and 399 Jonny Atkin should provide some entertainment for the crowd, as will 135 Donny and 143 Aaron Mann who have been standout performers in Micro Bangers for the past 12 months.
After taking some time out from the sport, we are delighted to welcome back former 1300cc Stock Car World Champion 344 Ross Fisher who was never afraid of getting stuck in, but also possesses prodigious pace. Further interest will be provided by commentary team 25 Matt Black and 974 Alistair Oxby taking in their latest round of action on the other side of the fence.
But the majority of the field is made up of local drivers out to have fun on track with a good old crash – the backbone of Banger racing and just the way we like it!
1300cc Stock Cars
The prestigious Steve Newman Memorial has been won for the past two years by visiting drivers – the same one, 167 Jimmy Morris, in fact – can the homesters break that run this weekend? Another strong entry is power-packed at the top end and full of rising stars in the lower grades – a reflection of the formula’s rude health.
The current form driver is 333 Dan Weavers. The Norwich driver is gunning for his third straight final win at King’s Lynn. Out to stop him will be the likes of 216 Dan Booth and 340 Wes Freestone, both of whom are overdue a change of fortune.
With such strong numbers in the White & Yellow grades at present, it may be from these that the race winners come. 317 Lauren Overy has taken to the formula like the proverbial duck to water since graduating from Ministox. 341 Austen Freestone was truly dominant at the Steve Newman Memorial meeting of three years ago and would love to recapture that kind of form.
There are plenty of drivers with significant experience in the Red grade who now find themselves in the Yellows. Given the right breaks, the likes of 316 Danny McCluskey, 409 Carlos Pears and 450 Luke Jackson could be hard to catch.
The same can be said for 09 Buster Ketteringham who inexplicably has dropped all the way to White, where he finds himself among newcomers like 86 Dan Seneschall, Banger convert 511 Jack Licquorice and Banger star of the 1990s 173 Ray Sharrod.
Lady Bangers
A healthy entry of ladies is topped by grand slam champion 3 Danielle Hewitt who currently holds all three major titles. She is certain to be a frontrunner, but perennial superstars 74 Caroline Garner and 477 Amy Brown are more than capable of beating the Ely-based racer.
It is some time since the ladies had a regular meeting at the track. Winners that day were newcomer 72 Breeze Atkin and 332 Kelly Wilson in the heats, and 127 Helen Roberts in the final. Each will be in action again this weekend, with Breeze likely to prove tough to beat from her White grade start.
This weekend sees the ladies’ White & Yellow Grade Series Final. 514 Sherrie Martin and 762 Kerry Thurgill topped the points last season and will be hoping to convert that into title success, albeit with them now having to start from the Blue grade.
The bulging White grade entry, with several newcomers or returnees, is a very positive sign for the formula and should ensure a busy track, meaning the more fancied runners will have to work hard for their success.
