Introduction
Sunday afternoon (9 October, 1pm) brings a packed programme of stock car and banger racing action to the Adrian Flux Arena. National Banger action comes in the form of 1500cc Bangers, while there are major honours up for grabs in the Lady Bangers and Junior Bangers. Completing the bill are 1300cc Stock Cars and the annual visit of Super Modifieds.
There are currently 39 1500cc Bangers, 37 1300cc Stock Cars, 34 Junior Bangers, 26 Lady Bangers and 11 UK Modifieds booked in to race.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 10am and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
Bookings are still available for this meeting. Any drivers looking to book in who is not listed below may do so by calling 01553 771111 or calling / texting 07939 580652. If you are listed below but no longer able to race you may also cancel on the same numbers.
1500cc National Bangers
The meeting is final qualifying round for December’s 1500cc Banger National Championship, a title won for the last three years by 338 Terry Garrod, who also leads this year’s points. After not racing last weekend though, he has lost his lead in the overall national points. That mantle has been taken by form driver 830 Lee White. With only a few scoring opportunities left, the race for the silver roof is well and truly on, with World of Shale champion 88 Lyndon Stark and 337 Ashley Garrod also in contention.
Third brother 339 Jack Garrod leads the way in the Entertainers League and will be looking to consolidate that position with a strong showing this weekend.
Meanwhile, Stark will be joined this weekend by one of the strongest Team Starky entries for a while, featuring his brothers 887 Liam and 888 Lloyd, plus cousin 878 Liam Rowland.
Small/medium-sized car specialists 55 Ricky Ivatt, 319 Shaun Clarke and 566 Tony Pallett should be among the front runners, while former National Champion 601 Chris Medler will hope to put a relatively disappointing season behind him and get back to the forefront of proceedings.
Legendary 811 Pete Winter continues the countdown to his One Last Shot farewell meeting next season, and will be joined on track by son 812 Lewis.
Elsewhere, the field is packed with crash-happy locals who like nothing more than to entertain the crowd. Lone Predator 178 Kieran Bowman is in that camp, along with the likes of 223 Daniel Bear and 271 Ashlun Woods. Commentator 25 Matt Black will also be one to watch as he makes another on-track appearance.
Lady Bangers
The Gold Roof is the ladies’ most prestigious event of the year. The title is defended by #3 Danielle Ellis but there are plenty of contenders eager to relieve her of the crown. British Champion 127 Helen Roberts was something of a surprise victor in that event earlier this year but has plenty of National Banger experience to draw on.
Setting the pace from week to week this season has been 477 Amy Brown, Gold Roof champion back in 2010. She has also experienced several near misses since then, and would love to put that right with a second success in the big race this weekend.
Using the multiplier qualifying system to good effect, 762 Kerry Thurgill will start near the front of the grid and aim to spring a surprise.
Starting further back after missing a couple of meetings, 730 Marie Mayes will still be among the pace-setters and will hope to take advantage of any first corner shenanigans.
Other contenders include 514 Sherrie Martin, who will look to draw on the experience she has gained by branching out into other formulas, plus returnee 345 Karen Lown, and another lady with plenty of National Banger experience, 419 Laura Quadling.
Junior Bangers
The European Championship is on offer for the youngsters, having been postponed from its original staging date last month. Leading local 997 Wayne Cottrill will start among the favourites on his home track.
Strong competition comes from dual-licensed multi-champion 364 Bradley Lee. Further big-name visitors include British Champion Alfie Vince and well-travelled Startrax driver 104 Ellis Hopkins, who is joined by the ruthless 99 Shady Gough.
Long-distance travellers 300 Charlie Ayles and 333 Charlie Randall come all the way from the South Coast.
Other locals who will be aiming for a slice of the action are led by the experienced 608 Lennie Murkin, plus 93 Marshall Waldron and 229 Harry Cobb who have both had successful spells this year. With very little experience but plenty of heritage and impressive showings so far, 999 Louie Cottrill will be hoping to go under the radar and cause an upset.
1300cc Stock Cars
The 1300s continue a busy spell which has seen the legendary 116 Diggy Smith in superb form. He really is the man to beat on present form, but World Champion 333 Daniel Weavers will be looking to return to winning ways as he aims to secure the National Points Championship and clinch a gold and silver double.
Re-joining Smith on track will be his livewire son 161 Billy Smith, returning after a spell on the sidelines.
Other in-form drivers to look out for are 149 Todd Payne, who appeared to be the driver most likely to topple Diggy Smith at our last meeting, and 341 Austen Freestone who has earned himself a promotion to the red grade in his new car.
As usual, the white grade is packed with new drivers just starting out in the formula. After we welcomed Junior Banger graduate 524 Amy Lathan in a smart new car last time out, this week sees a return for 2 Ellie Dawson and a debut for another Junior Banger graduate, 70 Sophie Unwin. With star-graded 317 Lauren Overy booked to race, that gives us four lady drivers, even without 444 Natasha Street and 514 Sherrie Martin who hadn’t confirmed their intention to race at the time of writing. If all six, or even five, of them make it out, that must surely be a record?
Super Modifieds
The noisy, bike-engined American-styled cars will certainly provide some different action at a very quick pace. This season’s leading drivers on shale have been 197 Ryan Harrison, his father 97 Murray Harrison and 28 Simon Panton.
Like those three, 496 Neil Holcroft and 886 Dave Tomlinson will be familiar names to fans of BriSCA Formula One and Formula Two Stock Cars.
