King’s Lynn Pre 1980 Bangers - Sat 6th August 2022
King’s Lynn 1980 and Prior Meeting in 2022
Saturday 6th August – Pre80 Bangers - Aaron Keoghan 30 year celebration
Trackstar are pleased to confirm the Pre80 Bangers meeting will now be a celebration of Aaron Keoghan’s 30 years of racing. The Team Simples racer is one of the backbone of the Sport and we can't wait to celebrate his career with him and we hope to see you there too. What a great day this is going to be!
Although it was first announced as on the fixtures as a pre ’75 meeting in keeping with prior years, Trackstar now announce that the fixture on Saturday 6th August will run to a new format for cars from 1980 and prior. The decision to change hasn’t been taken lightly, but the increasing scarcity of older cars means that things must move on. We are also changing the structure of the classes running at the meeting which we believe will make the fixture just as appealing as before to drivers with older or smaller cars.
The key difference is to split the cars into three classes instead of two. The new class being introduced is for under 1750cc cars (but see the detailed spec below as further restrictions also apply). It is our wish to run a separate Final for this class but we will not do this at the expense of running an entertaining meeting for the paying crowd. There will be a separate under 1750cc Final as long as one of the following two conditions apply:
· There are enough under 1750cc cars still running to merit running their own race (at least 20)
· There are sufficient cars still running in the under 2000cc class that combining the two classes would result in a race of more than 40 cars
Rules Applicable to All Classes
Cars should be built according to the ORCi National Banger specifications in place at the date of the fixture.
The first heat in all classes will be limited contact. Nudge and spin only with no deliberate wrecking please. Following that racing will be to full National Banger rules but with no turning round.
The Classes
The specifications for the individual classes are set out below. In each case, the list of eligible cars is not an exhaustive list and drivers intending to race something less common should contact the promotion and we will advise which class(es) the car could be used in.

Engine specs for this class are as follows:
· Ford engines are permitted as replacements in any make of car but must be age-related – no replacement engines with more than 2 valves per cylinder and no replacements with a capacity higher than originally fitted to the car.
· Non-Ford replacement engines may be allowed at the discretion of the promotion to overcome build issues where the engine bay of the car being raced is restricted in size or shape or where a Ford engine is not available – these should always be cleared with the promotion
· Models marked in bold and underlined are limited to 1300cc in this class if using any type of Ford engine – and no non-Ford engines will be permitted in a Ford

Engine specs for this class are as follows:
· Original engines always OK – and original 2200cc engines will be allowed in Austin Princess (Wedge), Austin / Morris 2200 (or Wolseley equivalents) and Rover P6
· Ford engines are permitted as replacements in any make of car. In this class, 1600cc Zetec engines will be allowed as well as age-related engines but engine markings must be intact and clear of grime so that this can be verified at scrutineering. No 1800 or 2000cc Zetec engines
· Non-Ford replacement engines may be allowed at the discretion of the promotion to overcome build issues where the engine bay of the car being raced is restricted in size or shape or where a Ford engine is not available – these should always be cleared with the promotion

Engine specs for this class are as follows:
· Engine swaps are permitted but no multi-valve engines unless original to the car. We expect that most people will use a Ford Pinto or Cologne V6 (or Essex V6!) but any suitable age-related options will be allowed – if in doubt, please check with the promotion. Note that the Quad-cam Cosworth version of the V6 is not permitted.
· The engine you use must still be no larger than the original
Note that the Mk1 and Mk2 Granada and Volvo 240 / 260 series are not in the list above. As in 2021, these are still excluded from this meeting as they are still commonly used in modern-day Unlimited meetings and in the case of the Granada they proved overly dominant in the races when they were allowed.
Imported cars (American or otherwise) are welcome subject to being of the correct age. The promotion reserves the right to refuse cars that are so large that they are not in keeping with the spirit of the meeting.
We have also decided to stick with age-related engines for the Unlimited class on the basis that the Maarten Steenbekkers meeting is expected to attract a fair amount of material in July and allows modern engines to be used. That meeting provides a potential outlet for drivers that don’t have older engines available and we’re not expecting much in terms of leftovers from that fixture which would then be ineligible to race again in August if built with a newer engine. This may well be the last year that the Duratecs are not allowed, so traditionalists in the driver base (and we know there are a lot of you!) are urged to prove the point and make this meeting a success one again using only age-related equipment.
What next?
Bookings for this meeting will not open until much nearer the time, we do not anticipate exceed the capacity of the pits with these sorts of cars. Drivers can therefore start building with confidence that they will be able to get a booking when the time comes. We are happy to answer queries about cars and engines for the meeting with immediate effect – photos are always useful if you are not sure about the age of a particular model you have in stock.
