Introduction
Bank holiday Monday comes with a bang at the Adrian Flux Arena, King’s Lynn (7 May, 1pm), with an afternoon of full-contact racing action providing fun for all the family. The headline event is the annual ‘Bandit’ Memorial for two-litre Bangers, remembering Michael ‘Bandit’ Bailey, with further National Banger action coming from the Micro Bangers. The under-16s in Junior Bangers have their biggest event of the year, the World Championship. Completing the bill are the hilarious three-wheeled Reliant Robins.
There are currently 76 Micro Bangers, 38 2L Bangers, 38 Junior Bangers and 12 Reliant Robins booked in to race
Please note that any driver who turns up unbooked will not receive any complimentary admissions that they may be entitled to and may also not be allowed to race if the event is still fully booked.
PLEASE NOTE THAT JUNIOR BANGERS ARE FULLY BOOKED AND ANY DRIVER TURNING UP NOT BOOKED IN WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 10am and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
Two-Litre Bangers
As Michael ‘Bandit’ Bailey was a very popular member of legendary local team the Predators, many of their drivers will be in action at this special meeting. Leading the line is 178 Kieran Bowman, who so nearly claimed the title last year, only to miss out on countback in a red-and-chequered finish.
178 Kieran Bowman will be looking to get a good result in the Michael Bailey Memorial after coming close last year
Family commitments mean that many of the Predators’ drivers race less often than they’d like nowadays, but Bowman will be well supported this weekend by his younger brother Bradley (#279), plus the likes of 219 Robert Betts, 479 Joel Allen and 519 Lee Middleton. Although better known for their crashing, each of the squad would love to be the first Predator to win the memorial race since 176 Ady Gibbs in 2014.
The man who denied Bowman last year is 51 James Licquorice, who also won the title two years earlier and will be aiming to become the first driver to lift the title three times. His running-mate 212 Jack Maryon should also be in the thick of the action.
Other big names in the field include the man with more titles than he has room for on his roof, 830 Lee White, Swaffham superstar and two-litre specialist 337 Ashley Garrod, and a duo calling Trackstar home for the first time in 2018, 188 John Reeves and 898 Andy Battle.
67 Rickie Beasley will be out to cause some destruction, while the likes of 100 Callum White and the Gladiators’ entry – including 201 Phil Milner and 306 Nicky Milner – should also provide maximum entertainment.
Micro Bangers
The popular little Bangers always amaze with how much damage they can inflict and take. The cheapness and ease with which they can be prepared for racing guarantees plenty of crashing action.
Several drivers will be doubling-up in both categories, including White and Bowman. They will be joined by previous national champion 566 Tony Pallett, who always goes well in Micros, and plenty more Micro specialists out to enjoy themselves and have a good crash.
The large entry is packed with such drivers. Regular entertainers include 69 Brad Bartrum, 143 Aaron Mann, 551 Brett Jackson and running-mates 352 Ben Mynott and 452 Paul Sweet.
69 Brad Bartrum will be hoping to avoid acrobatics like this
Then there is the hard-hitting 247 Jon Bailey, 511 Jack Licquorice and 342 Ryley Freestone who is coming out for a play – he won’t be going for wins, that’s for sure!
Expect 247 Jon Bailey to be in the middle of the action
From further afield, a large contingent make the journey down from Yorkshire to race at the country’s premier shale venue, including 110 Brett Judge and Junior Banger graduate 619 Brad Tomlinson, who won the youngsters’ British Championship at King’s Lynn last year.
Junior Bangers
With a World Championship up for grabs, we’re in for a treat in the Junior Bangers. The leading drivers will all descend on West Norfolk to determine who is the best of them all.
Defending the title is pint-sized 131 Harley McCarthy. The youngster was something of a surprise winner at Northampton last year but has already proved it was no fluke by consistently being among the formula’s frontrunners.
McCarthy is a regular racer at King’s Lynn but he is not a home-based driver. The home promotion’s hopes rest primarily with the two drivers who fought tooth and nail over last year’s national points championship. It was 90 Joey Holmes Jr who prevailed, and he also took the English Championship. Hoping to turn the tables and gain some revenge will be 328 Ben Nichols.
Trackstar National Points Champion 90 Joey Holmes Jnr will be a strong contender for the Junior Banger World Final
Plenty more home drivers will also fancy their chances, including the super-fast 999 Louie Cottrill and several drivers who can show a rapid turn of pace when the mood takes them, including 114 Luke Spinks, 229 Harry Cobb, 340 Sam Bennett, 608 Lennie Murkin and 993 Ryan Nieuwenburg. The experienced 854 Aiden Storr could also be a wild card, along with fellow Lincolnshire drivers 77 Lewis Ivatt and 715 Josh Prince likewise.
Leading the line for Spedworth are last year’s runner-up, 156 Levi Ougton, McCarthy’s big sister Morgen (#13) and experienced racer 823 Jamie Murrell.
Sheffield-based driver 450 Blake Platts represents Incarace, but will look to make the most of his shale experience, while 556 Louis Barker has plenty of experience – and success – on the shale too.
The Startrax drivers should also be shale specialists, but their line-up isn’t packed with experience as many of the northern shale regulars are dual-licensed and representing another promotion this weekend.
Whoever comes out on top on Monday will have earned it, and can proudly display the gold roof for the next year.
Reliant Robins
The little three-wheeled ‘Plastic Pigs’ never fail to disappoint with their antics. Some drivers will spend as much time rolling on to their roofs as racing on all three wheels, shedding bodywork all the way as they go.
Reliant Robin Racing is always a hugely entertaining spectacle
The entry list includes some of the formula’s biggest names in their first chance to race at King’s Lynn this year. Leading the way is national points champion 385 Roy Gedge, while 553 Daniel Douglas also has a glittering CV.
The vastly experienced 490 Lee Barnard and 576 Colin Aldred like nothing better than to entertain the crowd and will be certainly worth watching.
Further jokers in the pack include 551 Jame O’Hanlon and 554 Chalky Douglas.
Funfair Rides
