Introduction
BriSCA Formula One stock cars make their first King’s Lynn appearance of 2017 on Saturday night (25 March, 5:30pm). The Big League will be joined by another huge entry of BriSCA Formula Two stock cars, providing a BriSCA fan’s dream with bumperwork in every race.
There are currently 46 BriSCA F1 Stock Cars and 71 BriSCA F2 Stock Cars booked in to race.
Any driver who is not listed below may not be allowed to race if they turn up. If they are allowed to race they will not receive any complimentary admissions.
Drivers please note that the pits open at 2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race.
BriSCA Formula One
A turnout plenty large enough for a full-format meeting is expected, with most of the sport’s big names in attendance. Leading the entry is world champion #1 Frankie Wainman Jr who also topped the King’s Lynn track points last season. He began 2016 with two dominant displays in his new car at the Adrian Flux Arena that signalled him out as the man to beat. Will he be able to continue that kind of form in 2017?
World Champion 1 Frankie Wainman's final victory at the opening King's Lynn last year signalled him as being the man to beat on shale
The one shale meeting to have taken place so far this year was at Belle Vue last weekend and was won by Leicestershire’s 445 Nigel Green for whom 2016 was a breakthrough year. Now established among the superstars, he will be aiming to lift his first major title this year.
445 Nigel Green won the opening final of the season at Belle Vue last Sunday
‘Mr Box Office’, 150 Mick Sworder has been one of the most successful drivers at King’s Lynn in recent years and is certain to be in the hunt for race wins again – all while entertaining the crowd with his flamboyant style.
Win or lose expect "Mr Box Office" 150 Mick Sworder to be making the headlines!
Local boy 16 Mat Newson ended what had been a slightly disappointing 2016 with a final win at our last meeting and will be hoping he can produce more of the same this year. Only three men have won more finals at the track than Newson, one of them being 55 Craig Finnikin. The shale expert has had an up-and-down couple of years and will be looking to return to his best.
Can 16 Mat Newson continue where he left off last season with a final victory
Multi-champion 84 Tom Harris and 4 Dan Johnson have also had plenty of success at King’s Lynn and aren’t afraid to get stuck with some hard hits. They, as always, will be ones to watch.
Expect 84 Tom Harris to be using the bumper well!
There are also returns for father-and-son duo 91 Tony and 191 Josh Smith, and twice Formula Two world champion 532 Daz Kitson, while travelling interest is provided by Dutch trio of 54 Sierd de Vries, H112 Arhan Ligthart and H295 Willem Zwerver.
The meeting will kick off with the 2016 White & Yellow Grade Series final, won last by 244 Mick Rogers who is set to start from the second row of yellow tops for this edition, behind Cambridgeshire driver 415 Russell Cooper, 192 Luke Dennis, and the local favourite 326 Mark Sargent. Veteran racer 280 Colin Nairn will start from the front of the white grade, from where he may spring a surprise if he can make a break and drive a tidy race.
Will 280 Colin Nairn make a flying start in the F1 Stock Car £1000 White and Yellow Final?
BriSCA Formula Two
A massive entry is booked for King’s Lynn’s first World of Shale qualifier of the year, and is full of big names. A quite astonishing number of Dutch drivers are making the visit, clearly eager for some practice at the venue which has now been confirmed as hosting this year’s World Final. They are headed by the defending world champion H124 Wim Peeters who had hoped to race at the season-opener three weeks ago, only for mechanical problems to intervene. His father H24 Willie Peeters will also be in action, with H99 Sjeng Smidt Sr and H218 Sjeng Smidt Jr making another father-and-son pairing. Throw in 1994 British champion H30 Toon Schut, regular visitors H103 Chris van der Elst, H231 Peter Schut and H281 Danny van Spijker, plus several more visitors from across the North Sea, and you have a mouth-watering prospect.
Dutch star H281 Daniel van Spijker will be hoping for more luck and to keep on all four wheels than what he experienced on his last visit to King's Lynn three weeks ago!
From British shores, but still making a long journey, will be national points champion 7 Gordon Moodie. The 2006 King’s Lynn track champion revealed in our season-opener programme that he plans to race more frequently on shale on this year, and has so far stuck to his word. He has already found his form on the loose, with a win in the final at Belle Vue last weekend.
National Points Champion 7 Gordon Moodie has been a regular on shale so far in 2017 and won the final at Belle Vue last weekend
The English contingent is headed by 38 Dave Polley, who has started the season in fine form. Defending track champion 226 Billy Webster, and the man who rarely fails to win a race on the Saddlebow Road shale, 606 Andrew Palmer, will also be major threats. Along with Palmer, 13 Andy Ford, 871 Mark Simpson, 905 Rob Mitchell and 977 Dave Massey complete the list of previous WoS winners in the field.
Former World of Shale Champion 977 Dave Massey is likely to be a big threat
Others to watch out for include 225 Tony Blackburn, who won the final at the King’s Lynn WQR three weeks ago, local favourite 103 Carl Issitt, and the runner-up in last year’s World Final, 662 Steve Wycherley.
225 Tony Blackburn won the opening King's Lynn final of the season
There are visits from the West Country, once again, for 111 Lewis Geach and 2013 world champion 783 James Rygor, while hugely decorated king of Superstox 682 Jason Cooper makes the first of several planned appearances in BriSCA F2 this year.
2013 World Champion 783 James Rygor will once again make the long trip up from the West Country
