2L Stock Car English Championship
The English Championship has a drawn a big entry of runners keen to claim the first major title of the year.
Action from last year's 2L Stock Car English Championship
The St George’s Cross is defended by 217 Sid Madgwick who won it in dramatic fashion here last year. The two men he pipped at the post, world champion 6 Simon Welton and 570 Simon Venni will also be back, gunning for glory.
217 Sif Madgwick won an exciting championship last year by coming from third to first on the last bend
The majority of the formula’s other English-based champions will be among the entry, including silver roof holder 730 Deane Mayes, European champion 641 Willie Skoyles Jr and UK champion 158 Shane Davies.
Stock car legend and multi-champion 499 David Aldous is aiming for his first English title – a crown his father Eddie won in 1975 – in order to complete a career ‘grand slam’ of major titles.
Will "Grand Master" 499 David Aldous finally claim the one title
Previous English champions 304 Martyn and 306 Daniel Parker will be contenders, while form men 218 Jacob Downey and 349 Michael Allard will be eyeing their first major titles in the formula.
Will current 2L Stock Car form man 349 Michael Allard finally grab his first title in the sport
Beyond that, there are probably at least 10 other drivers – if not 20! – with realistic hopes of claiming the crown.
BriSCA F1 Stock Cars
The next stop on the road to gold is in store for the BriSCA F1 stock car drivers are looking to secure their places on the grids for the semi-finals at Skegness and Sheffield in the latest world qualifying round.
Local driver 16 Mat Newson comes into the meeting having won the final at Sheffield last weekend, so will be aiming to chalk up another on his home track. He beat Wainman brothers 1 Frankie and 212 Danny to the flag at the Yorkshire venue, with the pair also showing strong shale form.
1 Frankie Wainman has been showing strong shale form recently
Throw in world qualifying points leader 4 Dan Johnson, early-season pace-setter 390 Stuart Smith Jr and superstar 445 Nigel Green, and we have a star-studded line-up ready to make sparks fly.
Expect 445 Nigel Green to have a major say in where the Silverware goes
That’s without even mentioning multiple King’s Lynn final winners 55 Craig Finnikin and 259 Paul Hines, plus one of the best performers at the track in 2016, 2 Paul Harrison. The first-named of that trio plans to race in Holland during the week alongside Danny Wainman, so will be hoping he’s not too jaded come Saturday night.
2 Paul Harrison & 212 Danny Wainman always go well at King's Lynn
335 Mark Woodhull is one of the less-heralded drivers who absolutely flies around King’s Lynn, while the likes of 244 Mick Rogers, 348 John Wright, 415 Russell Cooper and 463 James Morris could be further ones to race to some success under the radar.
Rising stars 25 Bradley Harrison, 422 Ben Riley and 555 Frankie Wainman Jr Jr will aim to continue their rapid rises, while at the other end of the spectrum, 73 Rob Cowley continues his farewell tour.
We also welcome former BriSCA F2 man 278 Paul Hopkins for his first visit to the track in the Big League.
Livewire 197 Ryan Harrison is booked in and is expecting to be debuting a new car.
Heritage F2
The Heritage F2 stock cars make their first-ever appearance at King’s Lynn. The cars, which hark back to the formula in the 1960s and ‘70s, run the traditional Side-Valve engine and are much more heavily-based on road cars.
A strong entry includes Gold Cup winner 773 Nick Whitney plus former title-holders 59 Nigel Finnegan, 198 Alan Nicholson and 205 Paul Rookyard.
Father and son duo 728 Graham and 128 Jack Bunter will be quick in the older-style cars, while 311 Granville Wright’s beautiful Bert Finnikin-esque could be the best-looking and 247 Andy Webb’s among the pace-setters.
Funfair Rides
All the fun of the fair will be at King's Lynn on Saturday with the hugely popular Fun House making a reappearances. The good news for mum and dad is that this is free for the kids to go on as often as they like!
